“In the beginning I was so young and
such a stranger to myself I hardly
existed. I had to go out into the world
and see it and hear it and react to it,
before I knew at all who I was,
what I was, what I wanted to be.”

~ Mary Oliver, Upstream

Thirty-seven years ago, at this early morning time, I was in the early stages of labour. My mom was getting that phone call summoning her to come to look after my daughter while I was in hospital.

I was soon to give birth to my second child, a son. I had no idea about anything, really, other than that I loved my almost two-year-old daughter fiercely, in the same way I already loved this unborn babe.

Everything else was smokescreen.

Happy Birthday, Michael. You brought joy to my life. Such an easygoing baby, a mischievous child, and a man I am proud of. I love you.
