As an SCN Board Member, I was honored to have been invited to attend the President’s Breakfast on Sunday morning where I enjoyed more good conversation with my SCN Sisters.
Then I was off to learn about Harnessing the Present Moment for Deep, Authentic Writing with Carolyn Scarborough. We went on a sensory walk out to the pool as part of this session. We were instructed to be in complete silence during the time we walked around observed, smelled, listened, and touched what caught our attention. Then we silently returned to the seminar room where we, continuing in silence, wrote what we were inspired to write. Without a doubt, this was one of treasures I will keep with me from this conference. The writing I did during this time came from the depth of me. I plan to continue the practice regularly.
Finally Kate Farrell taught us about writing about our mothers in Pearls of Wisdom: Memories about Mother. Kate recently published a compilation of stories from daughters remembering their mothers called Wisdom Has a Voice. My partner in this session was a precious young woman, also an adoptee, with a story that deeply touched me. I suspect you’ll be hearing more about her from me in the days to come.
All too soon, the weekend was over and it was time to bid farewell until we gather again in 2014 for the next conference. I took with with me special memories of magic moments and golden nuggets that apply to my life as well as my writing. It was a blessed weekend.
