Fall Update

There’s no longer any denying it: today is the first day of autumn and summer is over. With the passing of summer my thoughts turn from gardening and other summer pleasures back to writing projects.

I regret that writing has taken a backseat in my life for the past few months. I don’t regret the time I’ve enjoyed outdoors soaking in the gorgeous summer we enjoyed here in the Pacific Northwest but now that the days are cooler, and the rainy season appears to be upon us again, it’s time turn my focus back to writing and adoption awareness.

Two Hearts launched in June and I’ve been busy with promotion and marketing–both of which take me out of my comfort zone–but I’ve learned that stepping into the scary zone sometimes is where the fun and magic happens!

To date 70% of sales have been print books. The ebooks have sold exclusively in Kindle format even though it is also available for the Nook, Kobo, and Sony readers, which makes me wonder if it was worth the effort to format it for those readers. Time will tell, I suppose.

Here are a few things on the horizon for me in the coming months:

  • I’ll be attending Forget Me Not Family Society’s fall workshop in November where Brian Stanton who will be presenting a performance of his one man play BLANK.
  • I continue to be a regular contributor to Adoption Voices Magazine–most recently about truth, or lack thereof, in adoption and the impact on the adoptee.
  • I’m excited to be working with author Denise Roessle and adoption educator and writer Judy M. Miller on a proposal for a presentation about healing in adoption.
  • I’ll be a guest at the National Association of Memoir Writers November teleseminar talking about about writing healing  memoir with an adoption focus to coincide with Adoption Awareness Month.

I’ve been toying with an idea for an e-guide about self publishing–kind of a simple one-stop-shop resource with tools and resources for getting your book out there, and I’ve been dabbling in fiction. Oh yes, and my computer’s hard drive, as well as my external hard drive, are full and I need to take time to wade through and get rid of some of them. As always, there never seems to be enough time to do all the things I want to do.

That’s my plan for fall. What’s yours?

I’m a writer, reader, and creative. I thought by now I’d have things figured out, but I keep coming up with more questions. I think that’s okay. I’m here most mornings pondering ordinary things and the thin places where faith intersects.

  1. Wow! You are busy!

Something I’m looking forward to in November, which is fast becoming a fall tradition for me, is NaNoWriMo. (National Novel Writing Month) I’m super excited about it!

  2. Much like yours, I need to get back to focusing on my writing. I’ve now discovered the real story of my father’s admission as a child to an orphanage and real names of my grandparents. The story I’d been told must have been my father’s memory/version of the facts. At any rate, that has sparked a desire to write a historical novel about the orphanages in Kentucky during the early 1900s. But first — the memoir to finish! I’ll have an easier time focusing on writing with the cooler days and fewer sunny ones drawing me outdoors. 🙂

You have a very busy schedule ahead of you, but one I know is central to who you are and your passion. I’ll be praying for many blessings on you and your efforts.
