Fast Times

Is it just me? Or does time seem to be whizzing by for others too?

It seems that the older I get the faster time passes. Sometimes I wonder if there is some kind of freaky physics thing happening that is causing time to move faster than it once did. Whatever happened to the days of waiting in anticipation for something to happen? These days it’s more like things are upon me before I realize it.

It’s more than just being busy–though I am busy. Hours, days, weeks, months seem to blend together and before I know it a season has passed by. I’m finding it difficult to live mindfully and in the moment because there always seems to be something I need to get done, somewhere I need to be, someone I need to touch base with.

There are so many things I want to do but I struggle to find time to get them done. I want to start working on another quilt (or finish one of my WIPs); there seems to be a never-ending selection of books I want to read; there are closets and drawers in my house begging to be sorted through; there are topics I want to study up on (like keeping goats and chickens).  And work? Don’t even get me started about all the things I have to do at work.

It would be such a treat, even just for a few days, to have the ability to slow the passing of time, to experience life like I did as a child when it seemed time passed so slowly. Remember those lazy days of summer vacation that seemed to last forever? How about the excruciating anticipation of waiting for Christmas to arrive? Ah, if only. If only.

If you hear any news about some crazy time warp thing happening in the world please let me know. And if you’re experiencing the same phenomenon of time speeding up let me know that too.

I hate to think I’m the only one experiencing this.

I’m a writer, reader, and creative. I thought by now I’d have things figured out, but I keep coming up with more questions. I think that’s okay. I’m here most mornings pondering ordinary things and the thin places where faith intersects.

  1. You know, it seems that way to me too. I’ve had (older) people tell me how quickly time passes, and when I was younger I didn’t think much about it. Now that my kids are grown, and I am a bit older, I’ve noticed that they are right! Not sure what exactly to do about it other than savor each day and make the most of my time. 🙂 Have a wonderful, slow paced weekend!

    1. I think you’re right, Karen. Savoring every moment of every day is the key. Happy weekend!

  2. You aren’t!!! I feel the same way!!

  3. I definitely feel that way, too. Time goes whizzing by so fast it makes my head spin. Well, that and the wine.

It really slows down when I’m sick and hoping to get through a cold or flu. I think I like the fast version of time MUCH better. 🙂

    1. Ha! When you put it that way, I have to agree!

  4. Oh Linda, how I relate to your quandary of time whizzing by in a flash. I guess the lesson here is capture the precious moments when you can since time is going to slip by at its own pace! You are not alone 🙂

  5. I agree, I have unfinished “stuff” all over!

  6. Nope, you are in excellent company. At sixty, a year is 1/60th of my life. At twenty it was 1/20th. So based on fractions, time seems to be passing more quickly!

  7. I’ve decided that what I need to do is clone myself. Then I could get twice as much done. One of me could read all the books on my list while the other one tended to the duties. Sounds like a good plan, doesn’t it? I love Jim Croce.

    1. Ah if only that were possible, Grace!

  8. Yes, it’s going way too fast. It does this for people who much more they want to do than time in which to do it. Frustrating, but I wouldn’t want to live any other way. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  9. That’s one of my all time favorite songs — that and the one by Cat Stevens called Cats in the Cradle, also about time getting away from you. For me it’s a very seasonal thing. If only I could speed the excruciating days of August and September along a bit (that Texas heat!), and add that extra time onto November and December!

  10. I remember when time seemed to stand crawl and a week was like a month and a month seemed like a lifetime. Now it’s the old proverbial race against time and time is winning. I guess it’s a reminder how little time we really do have and we shouldn’t let any of it go to waste.
