“Many of us who aren’t farmers or gardeners still have some element of farm nostalgia in our family past, real or imagined: a secret longing for some connection to a life where a rooster crows in the yard.”
~ Barbara Kingsolver, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
It makes me happy to wake to the sight of mason jars full of yesterday’s labour on the kitchen counter waiting to be wiped, labeled, and tucked away for winter. This morning I’m seeing vegetable soup.
I’ve got salsa on my mind for my next project. I grew jalapeño peppers this year so I could use ingredients exclusively from my garden and, wouldn’t you know it, the bell peppers haven’t produced well so I’ll have to use some grown by a local farmer. The tomatoes, onions, garlic, and jalapeño peppers will be from my garden though so that’s something.
Taking a day off canning while I wait for more tomatoes to ripen. I wonder what kind of mischief I’ll find to get into instead.
