“Many of us who aren’t farmers or gardeners still have some element of farm nostalgia in our family past, real or imagined: a secret longing for some connection to a life where a rooster crows in the yard.”
~ Barbara Kingsolver, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
It makes me happy to wake to the sight of mason jars full of yesterday’s labour on the kitchen counter waiting to be wiped, labeled, and tucked away for winter. This morning I’m seeing vegetable soup.
I’ve got salsa on my mind for my next project. I grew jalapeño peppers this year so I could use ingredients exclusively from my garden and, wouldn’t you know it, the bell peppers haven’t produced well so I’ll have to use some grown by a local farmer. The tomatoes, onions, garlic, and jalapeño peppers will be from my garden though so that’s something.
Taking a day off canning while I wait for more tomatoes to ripen. I wonder what kind of mischief I’ll find to get into instead.

(Don’t forget every comment on the blog in August enters your name into the drawing for either a copy of the beautiful Bella Grace magazine or my book Two Hearts: An Adoptee’s Journey Through Grief to Gratitude.)

Another beautiful photo! And not only the sight of the filled mason jars, but don’t you just love hearing the little “ping” as the jars seal? That delightful sound is music to my ears and one of my favorite parts of canning.
Sorry your bell peppers aren’t producing this year. That’s a bummer. Mine are doing very well…wish I could send some your way. I am enjoying chopping them, tossing them with a bit of olive oil, then roasting them for about a half hour. Roasted red peppers and roasted zucchini are my lunch these days.
Happy weekend to you,
Patti
I sure do love that ping! It’s such a satisfying sound, isn’t it?
Your lunch recipe sounds delicious!
Love that photo Linda. The vegetable soup sounds delicious. Enjoy!!
Thank you, Celine. It’ll be so satisfying to be able to grab a jar of nutritious soup from the shelf in the middle of winter.
Yum. I want to come visit you. 🙂
Wouldn’t that be fun?!
I’ve probably said this before, but I bet your kitchen smells amazing. I’d love to sit at your table and just watch you make your magic. Of course, you may put me to work and that’s okay too 😀
I’d love to have you at my table, Kat! Though I think I’d pour us each a big cup of coffee an join you at the table for a good long chinwag!
I could not find how to make a new comment, so hit “reply” instead. These tomatoes are beautiful. You don’t see these at the grocers. And thanks for the shout out! I am not blogging as much as before, but I do put out a few thoughts still, here and there. Thank you for sharing.
You don’t find tomato plants like this at the nursery either (at least not around here). That’s why I save seed and start them indoors when the summer garden is still a dream in my mind.
And, you’re very welcome! 🙂
