“With mirth and laughter let old wrinkles come.”

~ William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

Today is my birthday. Yesterday, Gerry mentioned the fact to his 96-year-old mom who is, of course, struggling with the swift decline in her husband. For a moment her eyes brightened, her lips turned up in a smile, and she looked at me and said “It is? Well, Merry Christmas!”  The moment of levity was a sweet one.

I’m a writer, reader, and creative. I thought by now I’d have things figured out, but I keep coming up with more questions. I think that’s okay. I’m here most mornings pondering ordinary things and the thin places where faith intersects.

  1. We’ve learned to smile or laugh more often haven’t we. Something about watching and holding hands with aging declining parents
That changes our outlook and perspective.

    1. It certainly does bring into focus what is important and what’s worthy of letting go of.

  2. I find that at that stage, giving them something to smile about and enjoying their warm personality is far more rewarding than presenting them with facts that are for my benefit. Bless her. And Merry Christmas to you. ?

    1. I agree, Celine. And thank you for the Christmas greeting!

  3. I especially love today’s picture and it’s beauty touches my heart. I wish you a ‘rose’
birthday full of sweetness, beauty and richness. Happy Birthday!

  4. Thanks very much, Tamara!
