Looking Ahead

It’s a dark wet afternoon here in the Pacific Northwest. As I sit here at my desk looking at the rain falling, I just happened to glance over at my calendar and realized something that perked up my soggy spirits.

Two weeks from today is the longest day of the year! That means that in just two more weeks the days will start to get longer!

Now, I’m not in total denial, I know we’ve probably still got some winter weather in front of us, after all it’s in two weeks that winter technically begins.

Winter in this new home of mine us unlike that which I’ve lived with all of my life, and there are certain aspects that appeal to me. I don’t miss the snow, ice or freezing temperatures at all, and I’m beginning to get used to the rain. The milder weather is a definite plus, but when it’s wet and gloomy it’s really wet and gloomy.

It’s the daylight that I miss the most at ths time of year. It can get depressing going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark day after day.

I’m looking ahead to the winter solstice when the days will start to get longer. Before you know it, the flowers will be blooming and I’ll be back in my lawn swing on the patio!

Okay, maybe I should just slow down and take one extra minute of daylight per day at a time.

I’m a writer, reader, and creative. I thought by now I’d have things figured out, but I keep coming up with more questions. I think that’s okay. I’m here most mornings pondering ordinary things and the thin places where faith intersects.
  1. I was just thinking today that I would really miss the snow if I ever moved to a place that didn’t have it. I just love it – not driving in it, of course, but love how it looks and how it makes you feel. And snowball fights and building snowmen and sledding are lots of fun, too!

  2. It must be what you get used to that ya like. Cannot imagine living with sloshy snow each year. I like it warm, but do admit southern summers can be scorching. Here’s to longer days soon!

  3. I love a good steady rain but dont’ think I would like alot of it. I’m hopeing we’ll get a good snow this yr.

  4. I know my daughter struggles with the dark gloomy days up there in Seattle but she says it is better than the snow we endured in PA! So there is always something worse. Hang in there–in a few months it will be spring!

  5. Here in the UK we are used to rain and grey skies. I think our Summer this year maybe totalled about a month. Perhaps this is why I long for some sunny weather. I am not a lover of winter-time at all.

  6. I remember those bleak, snowy, freezing rain days in New England and don’t miss any of them! I can’t imagine ever moving from Florida as I am a barefoot, sunshine girl!

On days like you’ve had, I curl up in bed with a good book, peaceful music, cup of tea, two cats and a notepad and write.

  7. Winter hasn’t even started, but it’s cold already.

In the North, the trade off for the short days of winter are the long days of light we get in the summer, long days that they just don’t have the farther south you go.
