And now let us believe in a long year that is given to us, new, untouched, full of things that have never been, full of work that has never been done, full of tasks, claims, and demands; and let us see that we learn to take it without letting fall too much of what it has to bestow upon those who demand of it necessary, serious, and great things.
Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters of Rainer Maria Rilke, 1892-1910
It’s the first day of a brand new shiny year and I slept in. That’s not the way I like to do things.
I worked hard in the woman cave yesterday afternoon—moving, sorting, rearranging—and I was dead-dog tired by the time I came upstairs to make dog food and people food. I was also beyond grateful that Gerry and I had decided to forgo attending the annual Chinese food dinner with a large group of folks (a tradition we first started participating in before we moved to WA and picked up again when we returned to Canada). Supper, an episode of Fixer Upper and I was ready for bed.
And so, this morning, I am behind before I begin. But I do have an office I can work happily in, and when I make my way down there—later than intended—I’ll be glad for the yesterday’s effort and understanding of this morning’s tardiness.
Grace. Sometimes we need to extend it to ourselves too.

That says it all, Linda. We Type-A’s never need to apologize for sleeping in. I did the same thing today and, oddly, felt not a twinge of guilt . . . maybe because I took care of 7 two-year-olds during Sunday School and did the December Quicken accounts yesterday.
Across the miles, I can feel the velvet on your lovely rose. 🙂
Sounds like a well-deserved sleep in for both of us this morning, Marian. Happy 2018!
