Monday, July 30, 2018 – Final Week at Camp G and G

Having a grandmother is like having an army. This is a grandchild’s ultimate privilege: knowing that someone is on your side, always, whatever the details. Even when you are wrong. Especially then, in fact. A grandmother is both a sword and a shield.

It’s a new day, a new week—the final one of Camp G and G—and it’s going to be another hot one. Daughter will arrive and stay for a few days, then my girls will head back home.

This morning, Gerry is heading out on an all-day hike and Makiya and I are looking forward to a girl’s day. We’re planning a visit to the library and the mall, lunch out, a stop at the park so she can practice on the bars, and a stop at the garden to harvest some supper. Whatever we do, it’s certain that we’ll have fun doing it.

I love the age she is right now, just as I’ve loved each one that has preceded it. Different ages, different stages, all with unique gifts and precious memories as we’ve been blessed to watch her grow and change.

Nine is special. We have good conversation about all kinds of things. She’s always thinking and observing, asking questions and forming opinions, and it’s fascinating to see it all come together. Nine is also strong and fun, full of energy and ravenous for ice cream. Nine is imaginative and creative, and full of “Grandma! I’ve got a great idea!” moments.

This is the last week we’ll have a nine-year-old at Camp G and G. I’ll treasure every moment of it in my heart.

Hey, this is a guest post from Makiya. Grandma and I have been watching gymnastics movies I’m starting to get the hang of it. I can do all kinds of things like handstands and bridges, I’m working on a kick over so hopefully I’ll be able to get it nailed soon.

Soon my mom is coming and today is our last day together we are going out to the mall have some lunch there and then……

We are going to the park! I know what you’re thinking the park that’s boring, well I’m going to be on these flipping bars here I can practice gymnastics and then I think we’re going to the garden. So hopefully we’ll have a good time together I love you Grandma!!

I’m a writer, reader, and creative. I thought by now I’d have things figured out, but I keep coming up with more questions. I think that’s okay. I’m here most mornings pondering ordinary things and the thin places where faith intersects.
