But your solitude will be a support and a home for you, even in the midst of very unfamiliar circumstances, and from it you will find all your paths.
Letters to a Young Poet
We decide to take advantage of another warm and sunny afternoon to clean out the front flowerbed. I take time to cut flowers first, envisioning colourful vases on my kitchen windowsill.
I haven’t cut flowers for months. I haven’t taken time to be still and photograph them for just as long. Autumn gifts me with opportunity and time to return to a practice that inspires and comforts me.
The next morning, I put my trusted macro lens back on my camera and, in solitude and silence, set to work. I am rusty at first but I keep at it and the work starts to flow.
I am reminded of the power of intention, and how a lack of routine doesn’t serve me well. We have plans to remedy that; a whiteboard with Gerry’s and my schedules will help with that. I can live in the fluid for a while, but always need to return to the fixed.
This week has been a busy one, a peoply one, one filled with long and good conversation. Today, Gerry goes hiking and I return to solitude and silence, the place I hear Truth the loudest.

I do genuinely appreciate the way in which you wrestle common everyday words into a beautiful design. Thank you for sharing this gift with me…with us. Not only am I mindful of your ability but I am also drawn to appreciate the Creator of all words and languages. The design of communication is one of the jewels in the crown of Creation.
Soli Deo gloria, my friend. To the glory of our God alone.
