What doth it profit to argue about hidden and dark things, concerning which we shall not be even reproved in the judgment, because we knew them not? Oh, grievous folly, to neglect the things which are profitable and necessary, and to give our minds to things which are curious and hurtful!
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ
I might believe Thomas Kempis wrote these words this morning, if not for the Old English dialect, and the knowledge that he penned them six hundred years ago.
They describe, to a T, the vain arguments, and need to be heard, played out every minute on social media. And the news. Don’t get me started on the news.
The louder it gets, the quieter I find myself becoming. The clamour of the world is deafening; it deadens my ability to hear Truth. The voice of the Divine is so sweet and edifying; why would I choose anything else?
But I’m prone to, we all are. Until we sense that we are losing a piece of ourself, a piece of our beautiful, created self, and we turn back to Love.
Let’s do that today. And tomorrow.
Let’s remember that we are loved abundantly, as are our brothers and sisters. Let’s remember that only One knows the full and complete truth.
Life, this side of heaven, is harsh—ugly sometimes. It’s also beautiful and wonderful and filled with joy unspeakable.
Let’s walk in gratitude. Let’s choose to shine light. Let’s remember that we are all carrying bags of pain, and resolve to lighten the load of another, not add to it.
I fail at this too often, but every morning is an opportunity to begin again.
And so . . . I do.
Soli Deo gloria.
