“None of us knows what might happen even the next minute, yet still we go forward. Because we trust. Because we have Faith.”
~ Paulo Coelho, Brida
“Life is difficult.” The first sentence in M. Scott Peck’s The Road Less Traveled changed my life when I first read his book in my late twenties.
Peck goes on to say: “This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths. It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it. Once we truly know that life is difficult-once we truly understand and accept it-then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.”
When I understood, and accepted at my core, that life was going to be hard–and that it was that way for everyone–it made my personal hardship easier to bear. When I added a newfound faith to the mix, I was strengthened to the point where I was able to change the trajectory of my life and walk past some of the hardship.
Life is beyond difficult oftentimes, and things come at us that there is no walking past. I’m reminded of that this week on a few fronts and my heart aches for people I care deeply about. Clichés, platitudes, and inspiring quotes don’t help in times like these. Truth helps, hope comforts, and faith is the anchor that makes all the difference.
“We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.”
~ 2 Corinthians 4:8-9
