“What you see and what you hear depends a great deal on where you are standing. It also depends on what sort of person you are.”

~ C.S. Lewis, The Magician’s Nephew

The bone-chilling cold has returned but I’m still proclaiming the month of January to be one of my favourites of the year.

Yesterday, women’s bible study was cancelled due to the weather so I spent the morning writing and practicing photography. After enjoying homemade soup for lunch, I had more camera time then baked bran muffins and made granola bars. Gerry and I had planned to run some errands in the afternoon but elected, instead, to stay warm at home. It was a lovely day.

I had a conversation with someone the other day who was lamenting about this cold and snow and remembered that I once experience winter days very differently than I do now.

Fumbling, in the frigid wind, with the cord to plug my car in when I got to work. Plodding through snow at the end of the day to get back to the car, unplugging it and the awful noise of a cold engine grinding reluctantly to life. The crunchy sound of my jacket in the freezing wind as I brushed snow from my car. Driving home shivering because the interior of the car hadn’t warmed up yet, and wouldn’t really, until I was almost home.

January was far from my favourite month in those days. It seems perception–and experience–really does determine our reality.

Once again I’m reminded that these days are some of the best of my life. They are, we used to say in corporate-speak, the sweet spot.

I’m a writer, reader, and creative. I thought by now I’d have things figured out, but I keep coming up with more questions. I think that’s okay. I’m here most mornings pondering ordinary things and the thin places where faith intersects.

  1. What a great mindset — these ARE the best days of our lives. It’s our choice to make, isn’t it?

    1. Absolutely, Karen! And aren’t we blessed to have that choice?

  2. I would like January a whole lot more if I was spending it in Texas…or New Mexico…or Florida. It’s been brutal here the last couple of days – wind chills in the double digits (-36 yesterday), so I have no kind words for January.
