Friday’s Fave Five – September 1, 2023

Someone asked me yesterday if I was doing anything special for the long weekend. Long weekend? I suppose there is one coming up—and one that marks a return to routine that even us older folks still feel and appreciate. But one of the great gifts of retirement is that the only thing long weekends mean is it’s a good time to stay off the highways and out of the stores.

So, it’s Friday and we’re heading into the Labour Day weekend. Lots to be thankful for so let’s look at a few things with a Friday’s Fave Five post.

Lettuce
Chopped Swiss chard.
A morning harvest. Lettuce and beets.
Beets

Garden vegetables. I could be cheeky and wrap the whole post up by saying beets, tomatoes, Swiss chard, lettuce, and zucchini. Five things I’ve harvested, enjoyed, and tucked in the freezer from the garden this week. The garden is slowly starting to wind down but there’s still plenty growing. I am eyeing those beets and thinking pickles. I’ll wait a while yet to give them the opportunity to increase in size and myself time to get my bearings with the new addition in the house.

In addition to these, there are plenty of other things to highlight and be grateful for from the past week.

A pedi and a pumpkin spice latte. Two favourites in one! I enjoyed the first PSL of the season while getting a pedicure. Was missing my bestie back in Kamloops, as we always got pedicures together, so I chose a colour that was one she might have liked. (Typically, she’s goes for subtle while I go for louder colours. We complement one another in that, and many other, ways. ).

An afternoon drive. I’m feeling my age this week chasing after a very active puppy, running out of energy loooong before she does. Gerry suggested we take a break one afternoon, so with Molly safely ensconced in her crate in the back seat, we took a drive. Prairie food for my weary soul. It’s looking a lot like change out there.

Molly. One week today we brought this sweet girl home. She has turned our lives upside down in the best possible way—weariness aside. 🙂

  1. Welcome home, Molly! She looks like a sweetie!
Your garden is growing well. As I type this, The Professor is blending up another batch of tomato sauce. Our tomatoes did great this year; the peas, not so much.
Rides in the country are always relaxing and rejuvenating; glad you got one.

  2. Oh Molly is sooo cute. She will keep you on your toes I’m sure. Nice to be able to harvest things from the garden. We’ve only managed a few tomatoes this year. Have a good week.

    1. My goodness, it’s amazing how a tiny dog can keep you moving all day! I’m sure those tomatoes you grew were extra-delicious given that there were just a few of them. Every year is different in the garden, isn’t it?
