Garburators, Gardens, and Getting Stuff Done


It’s a big day around here. I’m having a garburator installed in my kitchen sink. For most of my life, I didn’t enjoy such a convenience, but when we moved to WA in 2007, our home had one. I got so used to it, that we put one in when we returned to Kamloops in 2014. I was dismayed to find that there wasn’t one in our new home here in Moose Jaw, but after today I’ll enjoy the convenience of one again. Ideally, most kitchen scraps that go through the garburator could, and perhaps should, be composted for the garden but I can’t do everything I’d like to do so a garburator it is.

Speaking of gardening, seed displays are starting to show up in stores and I’m contemplating winter sowing some lettuce and radishes. In fact, as I write this I’ve decided that I’m going to do it. I’m looking forward to the snow melting so we can see what we’ve really got as far as garden space in the backyard and start making plans, but we’re still a long way from that happening—Gerry’s still chipping away at the ice on our deck and in the backyard so we don’t kill ourselves when we take Maya out. Winter sowing in plastic tubs will suffice for the time being and will give me early growth when it finally starts to warm up.

On Monday, Laurinda and I had a coffee visit and did a bit of shopping. Yesterday, she used her decorator’s eye to help me arrange the shelves next to the fireplace in the living room. Gerry and I had a light lunch at T. Eaton and got his Saskatchewan driver’s license (I’ve already got mine). It’s taken a few trips back and forth with all the necessary documents to prove residency and that’s one task I’m happy to have behind us. Next up: vehicle inspections and licenses. It a process. 🙂

Anyway, as I said, today is garburator day. I’ll be spending much of the day in my office working on editing Living Liminal: A Slice of Pandemic Life and working on a piece for my writing group. Sounds pretty much perfect.
