Friday’s Fave Five- January 6

I’ve struggled to keep track of what day it was this week because of the New Year’s Day holiday which fell on Sunday but that was observed by many businesses on Monday. I can’t explain why, since it didn’t impact anything I did, but it seems any excuse to confuse my days, does. Maybe it has something to do with my age or the fact that I’m retired and don’t have a regular routine anymore. Who knows? Anyway, let’s look back at some good things from this week with another Friday’s Fave Five post.

Sunshine. Oh my, there’s nothing like big blue sky Saskatchewan sunshine and this week we had plenty. Fog rolled in yesterday, reinforcing the fact that the weather influences how we (I) feel. It was a good, healing week for the most part.

My 2022 Blog Book. Every year in January, I compile all posts from this blog into book format. It takes work to format it and I finished yesterday and ordered the print copy, it’s satisfying to know that’s done. Now I can move on to content editing my new book, Living Liminal: A Slice of Pandemic Life.

Grand days. We celebrated our granddaughter’s birthday on January 2 with a simple meal of homemade bread, minestrone soup, and, of course, ice cream cake for desert. It’s hard to believe this girl is 14 already! Cliché, but true. The two of us enjoyed an afternoon together on Wednesday that I wrote about here earlier too.

Home. One month ago today, we left Kamloops heading to our new home here in Moose Jaw. I didn’t share much about that journey here (including the harrowing first day when it took nine hours to make what’s usually a four hour trip). It seems a distant memory in many ways as we continue to settle in here. This week, time spent puttering in the kitchen and my office, taking delivery of a few new things (rugs for downstairs, a bookshelf for my office, barstools for the kitchen, spice racks for the pantry, a bed for the guest room), and Gerry putting up towel racks where there were none (oddly), continues to make it feel every more and more like our cozy home.

The Maple Leaf Bakery. It’s a tiny, local bakery located not far from where we live. They reopened this week after being closed over the holidays and Gerry picked up a sweet treat for us—two chocolate covered and two maple covered doughnuts. So delicious! There are many opportunities to support small local businesses in Moose Jaw and I am going to be intentional about doing so.

Hope your week has been filled with all manner of good things too. Happy Friday!

  1. For the two weeks my son was here over the holidays, I had to continually ask myself what day it was. A combination of holidays and different routines and various family members being off some of the days. The break was lovely and needed. But I am kind of glad to be back to regular routine now.

I agree about sunshine and how it makes us feel. It’s probably even more vital up there.

We’ve talked about putting some of my blog into a book. It would probably be time-consuming and costly to do it all, as I have 15 years’ worth of posts. But maybe I could start with the last year and then work back as I have time. What company did you use?

How nice to spend your granddaughter’s birthday with her. It’s great to get some of those little tasks and personalizations done to make your new house feel truly like home. That bakery sounds luscious. I like supporting local shops, too.

    1. I use Blog2Print to create a PDF of all blog posts for the year. From there, you could just print it out and put it in a binder or something like that. I choose to format it in book form and upload it to KDP. That’s the piece that takes the most time but it’s worth it to me. I encourage you to do something with all of your posts!

  2. Linda, your joy and happiness at being back home gives me goosebumps with each post I read. I’m so happy you were able to make this dream come true. Here’s wishing you a blessed 2023 which offers more afternoons with your granddaughter and the joy of delving into the remaining gifts Moose Jaw holds for you and Gerry.

    1. Happy New Year to you and Bob too, Sherrey. xo

  3. Glad you are getting settled in and yes I think being retired and then having a Christmas period makes it very easy to forget which day it is! I’m thankful for my Fitbit and my phone for keeping me on track with that lol. Enjoy the weekend.

    1. Ah yes, our electronic calendars! What did we do without them?!

I’m still teaching at 63 so i definitely know when the weekends come! hahah
I love your faves list……glad you’re settling in well to your new home/community. I LOVE supporting local small businesses. I wish more people would do so and stop shopping at that tacky icky Walmart. UGH.
I love your photo of the sunshine.
    HAPPY WEEKEND!

    1. Walmart drives me crazy too. Happy Weekend and Happy 2023 to you!

  5. nice, reflective post….I’m grateful for my husband, for without him I wouldn’t have endured surgery and been able to recover so quickly. Grateful for my health and continued recovery; grateful for the time period in which I grew up, for it was a safer, more secure time. Grateful for my parents who instilled kindness, courage, strength, and compassion into my soul. My grateful list is pretty endless. Grateful for words too

    1. Such blessings to be thankful for, Sara. I’m sending good wishes for your continued recovery. Thanks for stopping by.

  6. It seems we’re always trying to figure out what day it is. I blame it on retirement, couldn’t be old age. Your granddaughter is so lovely. I still think of her as a little girl, so I immediately thought the picture must be your daughter.

    1. Our grandchildren grow up so fast, don’t they?! And no, our struggle to know what day it is can’t have anything to do with our age!

  7. Happy Birthday to your granddaughter. I have two, 13 and 12. I also have 2 grandsons, 15 and 8.
I am retired and my days can get mixed up too. That is nice that you can turn your post into a book!

    1. How blessed you are to have grandchildren too, Susan. I’m sure you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine. I always say that these years are the sweet spot of life!

  8. We much prefer supporting local businesses rather than large corporate ones. Your little bakery sounds perfect.
Our weather like yours has been mostly sunny and warmer. I think we are going to be hit again with cold and snow, but the respite was delightful.
Best of luck on all your settling in to your new home.
    Happy weekend!

    1. Yes, I’m certain winter isn’t finished with us yet. The sunshine and break in temperatures helps, doesn’t it?!
