Top Ten 2023 Reads

Posted on December 28, 2023 by Linda

It’s always fun at the end of the year to look back at the books that have captivated me in the past twelve months. Books that I enjoyed so much I can remember where I was when I was reading parts of them; that I was sorry when they ended; that I may return to one day. This year was no different. It was a good reading year, I read fifty books and it was tough to limit my choices to just ten. But I did, and here they are in no particular order for your consideration. (I’ve indicated the six Canadian books with a maple leaf.)

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

Ivy’s Tree by Wendy Burton

The Cure for Death by Lightning by Gail Anderson-Dargatz

Leaving Wisdom by Sharon Butala

Still Water by Darcie Friesen Hossack

The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

The Forger of Marseille by Linda Joy Myers

Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent

The Librarianist by Patrick deWitt

Greenwood by Michael Christie

I haven’t read any of the books you mention as your top 2023 favourites. The titles are all intriguing. Now I have more to add to my ‘wanna-read’ pile. There is no shortage of good books – aren’t we lucky! Happy New Year, Linda.

I like seeing the covers of the books — it really draws me in and makes me want to “go further,” maybe even past the artistic cover, to find and open the actual book to Page 1 🙂

I’ve only heard of two of them. Where do you find your books? Are they suggested by friends, book group members, or on Amazon’s award winner lists?
    I appreciate your suggestions! Thanks.

A lot of these are written by Canadian authors, Kas. I scope out the long lists of the Giller and Scotia Bank awards here in Canada. I also see what friends are reading on Goodreads.

Hi, I’m Linda Hoye. Welcome! I live in Saskatchewan, Canada with my husband and our Yorkie, Molly. Retired from my corporate career, I appreciate having time and opportunity to fill my days with things that nourish my soul and spirit like writing. watercolour painting, reading, gardening, and blogging about the simple joys of every day. I’ve been blogging since 2008, starting fresh here in 2022 when we moved home to Saskatchewan. May this space be a sanctuary in a very noisy world. 😊
