Friday Favourites

Posted on December 16, 2022November 9, 2024 by Linda

Gerry and I have been Moose Jaw residents for one week today. We’re puttering away at things at homelike replacing weather stripping on the door from the laundry room to the garage (Gerry) and organizingthe walk-in pantry (me). There are always miscellaneous things to buy for a new house so I’ve beenshopping too. Our Keurig didn’t survive the move, we need large mats for the doors (because snow), spiceracks for the pantry, rugs for downstairs, a shower rod and curtain, and I’m sure there’s more I can’t think ofat the moment. We’re getting many things locally, but Wayfair actually phoned me after I placed the mostrecent order for rugs to ask if I was ordering for a business and needed a business account.

I’ve got a locksmith coming next week to key our locks because, unbelievably, the previous owners left usno keys. They didn’t use them, preferring instead, the keypad on the front door. I’ve got to figure out how tochange the code on that too. We also have a window blind lady coming next week because I need somethingin my office which is at the front of the house, and a plumber and electrician to install a garbage disposal(having had one for the last fifteen years, I don’t know how I ever lived without one). We’ve got someonelined up to insulate the garage months from now when it warms up.

We’ve both got shiny new library cards. I’m now a member of the Saskatchewan Writer’s Guild. We’re goingto get Saskatchewan driver’s licenses today. I’m making good progress on updating our addresseverywhere. We’re scoping out activities to get involved with.

The non-traditional Christmas trees are up and nutcrackers stand guard. There’s a wreath hanging on thefront door and outside lights shine red and green. I don’t have the big roaster I do turkey in, but trust Gerrywill dig it out from the storage locker (along with everything else) in the next day or two. Shopping is doneand I just need to wrap things. Can you believe Christmas is a little over a week away?

It’s cold and snowy. Real winter that’s -27C / -17F with the wind chill this morning—and it’s always windy. This is the prairie, after all. Hats and gloves are required accessories whenever we go out—warm andfunctional ones. Gerry suggested Santa might bring him a balaclava. The roads are bumpy with compactsnow, and intersections are slippery. We’ve seen men using a device that looks like a leaf blower strapped totheir back to clear light snow from sidewalks and driveways. It makes good sense, because the wind blows itback not long after it’s cleared.

The cars are filthy (as you can see in this photograph). I don’t know how we’re going to wash them and nothave the doors freeze shut. Gerry spied a car wash place near where we live so I expect we’ll find out soon.

We found a bakery not far from where we live that’s going to prove to be a problem. We’ve already visitedtwice for s few sweet and delicious bakery treats. One must burn more calories in the winter though, right?Such sweet sustenance might be more necessary right now.

When we go out, memories wait around every corner and I couldn’t be more content. I can’t possiblynarrow down the events of this week to five favourites and trust this rambling post will suffice for Friday’sFave Five. Happy Friday, all.

Hi, I’m Linda Hoye. Welcome! I live in Saskatchewan, Canada with my husband and our Yorkie, Molly. Retired from my corporate career, I appreciate having time and opportunity to fill my days with things that nourish my soul and spirit like writing. watercolour painting, reading, gardening, and blogging about the simple joys of every day. I’ve been blogging since 2008, starting fresh here in 2022 when we moved home to Saskatchewan. May this space be a sanctuary in a very noisy world. 😊
