We had four windows replaced yesterday. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. It’s the first time since we moved into this house in late 2022 that I have a clear view outside our dining room window. No more peering over moisture beads held captive between two glass panes that had lost their seal. No more frosty winter art when the time comes either, but that’s the price one pays for an unobstructed view. Well worth it.
Had I known how relatively inexpensive and painless the process would be (two men, two hours, and a couple thousand-ish Canadian dollars) we would have had the windows replaced years ago. But, as our dear Maya Angelou counselled, when we know better, we do better. The next window that loses its seal is outta here pronto.
So that’s how we entered September. With a clear view. Ish. As these things are.

The vegetable garden is (mostly) wrapped up. I’m regularly cutting strawflowers and hanging them to dry. They are the coolest thing. I’m envisioning them in a vase with the few stalks of wheat I rescued before harvest a couple of weeks ago. Still picking pretty bright zinnias for the kitchen countertop, and resisting the urge to bring out the needle-felted pumpkins for the same space. Plucking Tiny Tim tomatoes and keeping a watchful eye on the green Early Girl and Black Krim green tomatoes I picked and brought in the house, standing at the ready to roast another batch as they ripen.
First day of school today. It’ll be good to see the kiddos heading up the street to the big new school that’s welcoming them back for the second year. That back-to-school feeling never leaves us, does it? I’m fighting the urge to go to Staples and stock up on things I don’t really need. Might give in and do it anyway, because who among us doesn’t love (and can easily talk one’s self into needing) office supplies?
Gerry is keeping busy with fitness classes, tinkering with his 1931 Model A, and volunteering at the Sukanen Pioneer Village and Museum. I’m soaking up as much time in the backyard as possible, obsessing over genealogy research, pre-reading for Growing in Wisdom, rueing the day someone told me about June’s Journey, and still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. The goalposts keep moving and changing. Am I the only one?
Anyway, it’s a gift to still be here welcoming another beautiful September. It feels like a fresh start. January-ish, but with less pressure and more optimism. Strange, really, when one thinks about what’s on the horizon in terms of weather in these parts, but let’s not go there just yet. Here we are on the cusp of new beginnings, fresh starts, and, most likely, a batch of new office supplies. Bring it on.
