Another week closer to spring. I’m itching for it, how about you?
Joining in with Susanne and the Friday’s Fave Five crew again this week with a fistful of favourites from this week.
A mid-week treat. One day, we put Miss Molly in daycare and took some time for ourselves. Nothing fancy. We spent an hour or so at the library, ran some errands (and picked up two glass measuring cups at Dollarama for a fraction of the cost of one at Canadian Tire), and stopped for a bite at A&W because they had a special on Teen Burgers.
In another lifetime, when we lived in Kamloops and I worked in Seattle, after Gerry picked me up at the airport at the end of the week, we sometimes stopped at A&W for the “two can dine for $7.99” deal, which included two Teen Burgers, two orders of fries, and two root beer. Of course you can’t get anything close to that price these days, but we like to pop in for a couple of burgers when they’re on sale (these days we share the fries and drink.)
Tulips. Yes, again. They’re such a joy as winter wanes. I usually cut a tiny slit in the stem near the flower because it’s supposed to help them stand up longer. Recently, I read that putting a penny (if you can find one!) in the bottom of the vase is supposed to help. I’m trying that with these. Do you have any tips?
Getting my hands dirty. It’ll be a while until I can get out here and play, but I did start geranium seeds this week. The first heady aroma of potting soil almost made me swoon with delight. Spent some time inventorying my seeds and putting in a seed order, too. I’m itching to get growing!
A bookish afternoon. We were supposed to get a dump of snow and, while it started out that way in the morning, by afternoon it was all but done and there was a mere skiff outside. Still, it seemed a good excuse to pull out blankets and curl up in front of the fireplace to read the afternoon away. It was a quite delicious.
Women’s stories. I’ve been a member of the Story Circle Network for many years and a board member for a good number of them. SCN supports women in telling the stories of their lives and provides many opportunities to do so.
In 2011, I took on the task of starting a blog for the organization called One Woman’s Day where we published stories written by members about a day in their life. Last year, we moved the publication to our brand new home on Substack, Her Stories, and renamed it True Words from Real Women.
I recently stepped away from coordinating the space, leaving it in the very capable hands of a longtime contributor and supporter. This week, she reposted something I wrote in 2020 about the gift of working on the blog.
This is one of my top five things this week because it brought to mind the many women I’ve been blessed to work with over the years, helping bring their stories to light. You can read my little post here. (And I encourage you to check out SCN, too.)

Lovely list of blessings. I knew about the cutting for tuliips but not the penny! we have TWO large old whiskey jugs I picked up in my college days filled to the brim with pennies. My tulip greens are JUSt pushing through the dirt in the front flower bed (hopefully they will be ok with todays temps in the 30s) so once I have some flowers I will try the penny tip!
How wonderful to curl up and read all afternoon. I did similar yesterday…a grey, blustery, rainy on and off day. I went no where and never even put on my eye liner (something I have done every single day of my life since age 17!!).
ENjoy the weekend and think SPRING. I’m itching to grow as well. I do deck containers and this year I think i’m going to try cherry tomatoes again.
When we lived in B.C., I often had tulips up and then a good snowfall to cover them. They were always fine, so I bet yours will be too. Had to smile at your eyeliner comment. I put it on every day too even if I’m not leaving the house and hubby is away! Old habits die hard, I guess. Happy weekend!
Sounds like a lovely week and yes I do the penny trick with tulips. Definitely works. Reading time when the weather is bad snuggled up under a blanket nice and warm is a perfect way to spend an hour (or two, or more lol). Have a good weekend.

What a lovely bouquet of tulips!! We had snow for most of the day, the storm hit here pretty hard. Then the wind picked up. It was the perfect day to stay home and get some things done around the house.

I love the smell of the soil, too. I am excitedly awaiting getting my hands dirty. I have inventoried my seeds and bought what I need. Soon I will be popping in to our local garden shop and buying some plants.
An afternoon (or morning) spent cuddled up with a book is a perfect way to spend that time.

Sounds like you had a cozy day. Lovely tulips! I have no tips for keeping them longer. I just enjoy them while they last.

It’s always ok to share flower photos! I had not known about either tip for tulips. I haven’t been to an A&W for years–there’s none near us. I used to love root beer in their frosty mug. Curling up with a book and blanket sounds lovely.
Tulips are my favorite flowers. I need to get some for my table. No tips other than the ones you are already doing. I use a vase with a smaller neck but I like when they start to drape. Teenburgers are my fave. Definitely not that price anymore or the size they used to be but we treat ourselves when they are on sale too. Snow is all gone here but we’ve had crazy wind (up to 100 km/hr gusts) and today is supposed to be 18*C but it sure doesn’t feel like it with the wind.
