Hodgepodge – February 25

Posted on February 25, 2026 by Linda

Joining in with Joyce at From This Side of the Pond, and the rest of the Wednesday Hodgepodge crew, again this week to answer a handful of questions.

1. America celebrates turning 250 years old this year. Primary cities set to lead the celebrations on July 4th are Boston, Philadelphia, New York, and Washington D.C. Other significant locations for celebrating will be Charleston SC and the ‘historic triangle’ which includes Jamestown-Willimasburg-Yorktown Virginia. Of the cities listed how many have you seen in person? Of the cities listed which would you most like to visit this year? Any plans to do so? What’s one place in America you think everyone should see? If you’re not American what’s one place in the US you’d like to see?

As a Canadian who has not traveled extensively in the U.S., I considered opting out of this Hodgepodge, but here I am anyway. 😊 If I were to cross the border again, I wouldn’t mind visiting the Pacific Northwest where we lived for seven years before retiring. It’s so pretty and green most of the time. Wet, yes, that too, but that’s what makes it green!

2. Three sounds you love to hear?

Children laughing. Good (according to my taste) music, be it instrumental, solo vocal or choral. The sound of silence, like the all-encompassing silence of a sensory deprivation float chamber. Is that a cheater answer?

3. Three sounds you hate to hear?

Pretty much anything that’s too loud, like TV commercials that are far noisier than the program itself. My phone ringing—I only answer it for a handful of people. Lawnmowers when I’m out in the yard enjoying peace in the garden.

4. February 24th is/was National Tortilla Chip Day. Are you a fan? With salsa, guacamole, queso, or just plain please? Do you like nachos? With what on top? Is there anything (besides nachos) you make that calls for tortilla chips?

Occasionally. I like to crunch them up and sprinkle them on a bowl of chili.

5. We March into March with next week’s Hodgepodge…what’s one thing on your March calendar that makes you smile?

The first day of spring!

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We took the long way home from downtown today and I couldn’t resist capturing a prairie image. Still feel blessed to live here again after so many years away.

Hello Linda, your photos are gorgeous! I totally agree with you on anything too loud! And I just can’t fathom why the television commercials have to be so loud as compared to whatever show I am watching! I find it annoying! LOL!
I do love the sound of silence! I also love the sounds of birds chirping or singing, water (such as ocean waves, waterfalls, fountains)
Thank you so much for sharing!

A hearty yes to the sound of birdsong and flowing water!

Why is it that some commercials are so darn loud? I love the quiet of the morning.

    God bless.

Oh, yes, Jackie. Early mornings when you’re the only one up are the best.

Hi – found your blog on the HodgePodge link up. Didn’t write responses (yet) to this week’s prompts but enjoyed reading yours. The tulip images are LOVELY. What beautiful colors. And the sensory deprivation float chamber sounds like heaven on earth. I am a retired (but once very noisy) elementary librarian who appreciates quiet these days.

Thank you for coming by, Leslie. I bet you do appreciate quiet after retiring from that career!

I enjoyed reading your answers. When we still had our RV we visited a number of Parks in the US. We saw the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and others. I’m glad we did it before it became a rather risky country to visit ( my opinion). We live so close to the border but never cross it any more.

Yes, I hear you. Doubt we’ll ever return.

I saw the first question and thought the same, I’m from England and have never visited the US.
Children’s laughter is the best sound and I don’t like anything too loud either.
I am looking forward to spring too, it can’t come soon enough!

I dislike the way ads on TV are five times louder than the show you’re watching. I feel like some day TV will be ad free. We have options to mute and fast forward so it’s just a matter of time before they’re gone. What’s a place in Canada you recommend everyone see? I’ve never been to the western side but have seen a bit of the East.

Oh good question! Vancouver Island on the west coast is beautiful and there are lots of things to see and do.

Vancouver Island is on my bucket list. We were supposed to visit last year, but a wedding took us through British Columbia and Alberta, and we loved seeing those places, too.

Lots of Canadian beauty in B.C. and Alberta too!

Hi, I’m Linda Hoye. Welcome! I live in Saskatchewan, Canada with my husband and our Yorkie, Molly. Retired from my corporate career, I appreciate having time and opportunity to fill my days with things that nourish my soul and spirit like writing. watercolour painting, reading, gardening, and blogging about the simple joys of every day. I’ve been blogging since 2008, starting fresh here in 2022 when we moved home to Saskatchewan. May this space be a sanctuary in a very noisy world. 😊
